Network with Ecofinder Organization

Submitted by leonardodongo on 2 March 2016 - 11:43am

On the 16th Feb 2016, a team of 10 Field officers from Upendo Foundation visited the Ecofinder (Dunga Wetland Pedagogical Center) organization in Dunga, Kisumu.   We strive to develop the technological knowledge of the community we work with in the Oyugis region, to enhance their micro entrepreneurial skills, to use the locally available resources to improve their livelihoods and to help conserve the environment, and this was an opportunity for the field officers to learn more on the types of activities the organization does with the groups. Among the key thematic areas were environment, entrepreneurship development, community health outreaches, peace, leadership and governance.

We went through presentations of both Ecofinder and Upendo Foundation activities and through the process we learnt of the similarities in objectives and scope of operation, with the main objectives being to improve the income levels, health and the general social well being of the community.  Ecofinder works with women, youth in and out of school and the community at large. We learnt about the hybrid-feed bio-gas and composting (Ecosan toilets) which are installed in homes and schools.  Also the solar lamps enterprise and comfort and protection business ie soaps, sanitary towels, gift shop etc. We had both theory and practical experience of the activities eg how to make reusable sanitary towels; soap making; use of waste polythene papers to make bags;and use of hyacinth to make mats and other equipment. The team went out to the homes and a school that has Ecosan toilets. We had the opportunity to meet representatives of the women groups who shared with us their experiences and challenges with the projects. The groups run mentorship programmes for girls in school and youth friendly programmes to nurture them into future productive citizens.

We appreciate the hospitality received from the Ecofinder team and for their time to arrange for such great training for our team. It’s our desire that we continue with the partnership as we learn from one another to help build and grow the communities’ living standards.
