Here is all the latest news direct from Kenya:
The Umoja Project works with both UK linked and unlinked schools within our catchment. St. Charles is an unlinked School, started as a Pre-Primary centre for young kids. The enrolled students started learning in a Church building which could only fit a few pupils. As time went by, it developed into a Primary School, due to the fact that Primary Schools within the surrounding area are quite far apart, with some next to streams, valleys and busy roads, used by speeding vehicles and motorcycles and consequently hazardous to teachers and pupils alike.
The basis of Upendo Foundation is one of partnership; firstly through the affiliated CBO's which make up the federation; secondly the long standing support of our sponsor Amani UK; thirdly the international supporters linking through our sponsor and through the CBO's; lastly, but very importantly, with the growing band of agencies and like organisations here in Kenya.
Four years on from our launch as a registered NGO, the Upendo Board decided it was time to carry out an in depth review, involving all the partners at staff and board level. The review covered every aspect of structure, process and procedure and examined the strategy required for future development of the Foundation and its service to the community.
The work of Imani Community Development Organization includes various activities with people living with HIV/AIDS in Kasipul Division, including the issue of the early education of their young children. The Government has been funding primary education but neglecting the fact that pre-Primary education is very important as the foundation of child education. The rich and financially able were and are able to send their young ones to private schools, but this was not the general case.
The Buy a Gift for Kenya (BaG) scheme was started by Amani UK in the year 2005. A local team of 2 representatives each from the 3 CBO partner organizations was set up under the name UMIT (Upendo Information Management Team). Its leadership is very democratic, with annual revolving changes of the key positions. BaG, as it is known has improved the lives of very many across the federation.
