Submitted by leonardodongo on 7 August 2015 - 10:21am

I have recently conducted research around Oyugis, Kenya, to understand the problems young women face during their menses and will write a full report.  In the meantime however I feel it right to share my initial findings.  I have interviewed groups of girls aged 14 to 18 from different schools and have gathered a lot of information about the issues that arise every month for these girls and the serious implications for their everyday lives, their education and their future.

Pendo Letu Women Group is made up of widows and women living with HIV/AIDS.   Many do not have the strength to do farm work to support their children and grandchildren so, cognisant of this fact, Imani Community Development Organization introduced the idea of alternative work for the women to generate income, to enable them to be self reliant.  Imani staff trained the ladies, many of whom are over 65 years old, to make bead necklaces, bracelets and earrings from glossy paper.

Submitted by kennedyobongo on 15 July 2015 - 11:10am

Imani Community Development Organization is in the business of training community groups in alternative nutrition.  The community is used to common food preparation and eating habits, but due to negative attitudes, they neglect traditional indigenous foods that are locally available and of high value.  The objective of training is to change their attitude and perception towards such foods as sweet potatoes, pumpkins, grain amaranth, cassava, groundnuts and local vegetables through processes of adding value.
